THE PROPHET JOHN

Introduction:

A. Who Was The Greatest Prophet?

1. Most would look to Elijah and Elisha.

2. Others would remember Moses (Deuteronomy 18: 15).

3. What about Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel?

B. The Bible Says...John the Baptist.

Body: Luke 7: 18 - 35

I. A Curious Question.

A. Hint of Doubt?

1. Jesus and John are relatives (Luke 1: 36).
2. He was also filled with the Spirit of prophecy.
3. One last confirmation before his own death.
4. Confirmation for his followers to follow Jesus.

B. An odd response.

1. Jesus performs many miracles.
2. He tells them to tell John of these things.
3. Identity proven by actions - same for us.
4. Show me your faith - prove it! (James 2: 18)

II. The Greatest Prophet.

A. What did the people go to see?

1. A preacher that changed with the winds of doctrine and told them what they wanted to hear?
2. A smooth speaking, eloquent, well dressed expositor?

B. They went to see a prophet!

1. A messenger from God.
2. One who called right right and wrong wrong.
3. He was the messenger sent before the coming of the Lord!!

III. Accepted Or Rejected?

A. The people ("sinners and all") were baptized.

B. The "righteous" (religious leaders) rejected baptism.

C. Like a bunch of kids - you didn't do what we said for you to do!

Conclusion:

A. What Are We Seeking To Hear?

1. Do we want to be made to feel good (I'm OK, You're OK)?

2. Do we want to hear the truth (warts and all)?

B. What Would Be In Line With God's Will For Your Life?
