IN THE GARDEN ALONE

Introduction:

A. There Is No More Poignant Scene Than One Of Deep Sorrow.

1. The pain of a mother having lost a child.

2. The pain of a friend having lost their best friend.

B. We Are Allowed A Glimpse At Jesus' Great Agony.

Body: Luke 22: 39 - 47

I. Pray Against Temptation.

A. Goes to Mount of Olives.

1. It was His habit or custom to go to the garden.
2. His disciples continue with Him.

B. Pray to stay away from temptation.

1. Comes to the normal place (of prayer?).
2. Admonishes them to pray for relief from temptation.
3. What if?

II. About A Stone's Throw.

A. Goes off a short distance.

B. On bended knee.

1. Pours out His heart to God.
2. This cup = of suffering, anguish and pain (Please, let it be quick and easy!).
3. God's will is more important than my comfort.

C. Divine strength.

1. An Angel gives Him strength.
2. Prayed more earnestly.
3. Great drops of sweat like blood.

III. The Time Has Come.

A. Returns to disciples.

1. Rises up.
2. Finds the disciples sleeping - - AGAIN!

B. Sleeping from sorrow.

1. Sorrow for the impending loss of Jesus?
2. Sorrow for the thoughts of denial and betrayal.
3. Urgent need for prayer (they didn't see what hit them)..

Conclusion:

A. Jesus Suffered For You And Me.

B. He Endured This And More For Our Salvation.

C. He Has Proven His Love. Now It's Your Turn.
